The village has accepted a bid by Controls and Equipment Ltd. to help save energy in village owned buildings.
Controls and Equipment Ltd. submitted a tender bid of $62,700 to handle the Belledune Energy Management Control System project. This project involves making municipal buildings such as village hall and the Veterans Arena energy efficient.
"This is part of our energy retrofits to our buildings," said Village Clerk Brenda Cormier. "It's in the phase where the management control systems are put in each building where we can manage the use of the lighting and heating."
Clerk Cormier said municipal staff and arena employees will also take a training course so they can operate the program and teach others.
Council also agreed to a second motion to award a change order of $1,350 towards this project.
Clerk Cormier said funds for this project come from the Gas Tax Fund.
Exercise group needs new home
The Dusty Sneakers senior exercise group is looking for a new home.
The group had been using the Jacquet River School gym for the activity but the gym will no longer be available as of this September. Dusty Sneakers organizer Flo Guitard notified the village of this and is hoping a new home can be found before the fall.
Mayor Nick Duivenvoorden said this program is an important part of the community for the past 10 years and the village will do anything it can to fix the problem. He suggested the St. Gabriel's Church as a possible location.
Youth want skate park
A number of youth in the Belledune area want a skateboard park for the community.
Chief Administrative Officer David Hughes said a group of about 155 youth have started a petition through the social Internet website Facebook. He said one of the youth contacted village hall about the issue as well.
Council said they will contact the group to see if a presentation can be made to council at a future public meeting.
Council to mull over swing set
A representative from a local seniors residence requested a donation from the village for a new canopy swing set.
Councillor Elaine Levesque Godin said this is something council should take some time to consider because such a purchase could bring up liability issues.
CAO Hughes confirmed that municipally owned recreation equipment must be evaluated by the Canadian Safety Standards Association.
Seeking EIA for sewerage project
The village is working on getting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a sewer project in the village.
CAO Hughes said an information package on the project was sent to Roy Consultants on July 2.
"It's registered to get in line, essentially, for the process," he said.
