Village set to send out education flyers
Community development officer Andy Flanagan is working on an education flyer for the community.
He explained that volunteers from the New Brunswick Community College, the University of New Brunswick, along with Belledune village councillors Paul Daley and Elaine Levesque Godin, sat on an ad-hoc committee to study education opportunities. The committee wants to take the information they've gathered and include them in flyers to be sent throughout the community.
"It's to see reaction we get for local courses and for courses offered in the area...We also want to inform the public a little bit that there's other options out there like student loans...E.I. programs," explained Mr. Flanagan.
A motion was made by council to get the flyers sent out soon and continue circulating them until September.
Students hired
The village has hired six students for summer employment. Four are hired through federal government funding and the other two through the province.
Chief Administrative Officer David Hughes said the students were hired based on highest level of education. However, he said he would like to see this hiring process revised for next summer.
"I'm going to change the process for next summer by...(writing) job descriptions for each of the summer positions and I want to interview all applicants and match the skills and interests of these applicants to the particular job that needs to be filled," said CAO Hughes.
Mandy Smearer, Amey Lou Carrier Joncas, Katy McDonnell, Mark Ouellette, Thomas Doyle and Amanda Thomas are the students who have been hired.
Two alternates were also chosen should any of the original six not be able to do their job. They are Samantha Levesque and Candice MacGregor.
New library attendant hired
A recommendation by CAO Hughes to hire Vanessa Doucet as the new library attendant was approved by council.
There were seven applicants and three were chosen for interview. The three chosen for interview had direct library experience, according to Mr. Hughes.
"Of those, the candidate...had the ideas necessary to rejuvenate this program," he noted.
"The recommended candidate is the most enthusiastic, most creative candidate."
Kids reading clubs, Internet research, and surveying of the community residents on their needs are expected to be Ms. Doucet's focus in the coming weekss.
Lawn tractor purchased
Village council will purchase a new lawn tractor for the Jacquet River Campground at a cost of $5,300.
CAO Hughes explained that the current lawn tractor is in rough condition and needs repairs upwards of $1,000.
"We took it to a mechanic who said the electronics are shot and it needs $1,000 for it to work and it's only worth $1,200. It didn't take long to make the decision that we needed to get a new one."
The lawn tractor which has been approved for purchase costs $6,500 but the village is getting $1,200 back for trading in the current lawn mower.
Flanagan still deputy mayor
Deputy Mayor Emmie Flanagan will remain deputy mayor for the village.
Village clerk/treasurer Brenda Cormier explained that each June a review of the deputy mayor position is allowed. If anyone on council was interested in the position, they could put their name forward for a vote.
However, no councillors put their name forward, thus meaning no change in the deputy mayor position.
Survey for wastewater project
Council has agreed on a motion to pay $4,500 for a survey on the proposed West Belledune wastewater project.
However, Coun. Jerry Guitard questioned paying $4,500 for a survey that he felt was very similar to one done in 2006. The rest of council felt the new survey was not the same as the former one.
The motion passed four votes to one with Coun. Guitard casting the lone nay vote.
Awarded tender
Council has awarded a tender bid of $179,014 to Kenny's Trucking Ltd. for the Turgeon Road Phase 3 and Arena Drainage upgrade projects.
CAO Hughes said the $179,000 was the lowest bid out of six. The highest bid was $274,414.
The work will likely be done later this summer.
